Description
Figures round the brass commemorating Sir Hugh Hastings (died 1347), in Elsing Church, Norfolk, study prepared for, but not used in Stothard's 'The Monumental Effigies of Great Britain', published by Mrs Anna Eliza Bray, 1817-32, one of a large group of studies for this volume; three male figures, at left a knight, wearing armour and surcoat bearing arms, at centre Henry of Lancaster and Derby, on his surcoat the arms of England and a label of three points bearing the arms of France, at right Ralph, Earl of Stafford, bearing on his surcoat the arms "OR, A CHEVRON GULES". Pen and black ink and graphite and watercolour, squared for transfer.
