Description

This south-west view of Dryburgh Abbey, Berwickshire is one of four views of Dryburgh Abbey contained in the Hutton Collection. The remains of Dryburgh Abbey differ in an important respect from those of the other major border abbeys at Jedburgh, Kelso and Melrose. In each of those places, the most substantial remains are of the abbey church. At Dryburgh, the church has largely disappeared, but more substantial sections of the domestic areas of the abbey complex remain than at any of the other sites. This has allowed historians and archaeologists to find out a great deal, about how the monks lived from day to day. The abbey, founded for the Premonstratensians, or Order of White Canons, in 1150, fell into disuse after the Reformation of 1560.
