Description

Watercolour painting on paper, of the pietra dura decoration on the screen surrounding the cenotaphs of Shah Jahan and Arjumand Banu Begam inside the Taj Mahal. The painting shows one of the floral borders of the screen, created by inlaying precious and semi precious stones into the white marble that covers the Taj Mahal. The design created here is of a central stem off which leaves and flowering stems grow. The flowers have large multicoloured petals which hang down from the stem. The plant is surrounded by a thin black border of marble inlay. The design is repeated on the edges of the screen. The painting is framed by a thick black line.
