Description

This watercolour drawing of St Andrew's Church, Gullane, East Lothian, was painted around 1791 by Thomas Cocking, 'Captain Grose's assistant'. Captain Grose was most likely Captain Francis Grose, the celebrated antiquarian and author of 'The Antiquities of Scotland', which was published in 1791. The artist has chosen to show the interior of the church, including the remains of a decorative archway. This watercolour is very likely of the twelfth-century parish church of St Andrew's, Gullane. In 1612, St Andrew's was abandoned and the parish church moved to the village of Dirleton. This was partly in response to the heavy sandstorms that plagued Gullane at this time. With its isolated and exposed location, the church was particularly vulnerable to the storms.
