Description

Of the Maison Dieu Chapel in Brechin, Angus, this faint drawing, made in 1814, shows its south-west view. A note at the bottom of the drawing provides the audience with some historical information about the ruined chapel. The term, Maison Dieu, is French for 'The House of God'. The Maison Dieu Chapel originally belonged to a medieval hospital, founded in 1267 by Lord William de Brechin. Little now remains of this alms house, although an ambry (a recess in a church wall for holding e.g. sacramental vessels), some finely-detailed doors and a few Gothic window frames are in the drawing.
