Watercolour
In 1803, Edward, Viscount Lascelles, invited John Varley to his Yorkshire home, Harewood House, in order to paint views of the estate. In so doing, he treated Varley as a successor to Thomas Girtin, whom Lascelles had patronised and who had influenced the development of Girtin's art. The visit to Yorkshire gave Varley the opportunity to draw and paint other subjects in the area, as exemplified by the present watercolour of York Minster.
