Description

This watercolour drawing dates from August 1802 and shows the north-west view of the village of Saddell. A note underneath the drawing reads, 'The ruins of the abbey are among the trees to the right of the fine old elm tree and are shaded dark'. Much of the surrounding countryside has been included, and Saddell Bay forms an impressive backdrop to the whole scene. The village of Saddell is located around eight miles north of Campbeltown, on the eastern edge of the Kintyre Peninsula, Argyllshire, close to where the Saddell Water meets the Kilbrannan Sound. The remains of the abbey lie to the west of the village and Saddell Castle lies to the South. A large amount of the stonework from the twelfth-century abbey went into the construction of Saddell Castle in the early-sixteenth century.
