Description

This is a view of the south side of Restenneth Priory, Angus. The name of the artist is missing but it is likely that it was one of Hutton's own drawings. It is one of a number of drawings of Restenneth Priory, from different perspectives in the collection. In this view, trees and shrubs in the foreground obscure the building, but it is clear that while much of the priory is ruined, the steeple remains largely intact. Restenneth Priory lies about two miles east of Forfar, on the main road to Montrose. No one knows its exact origins, but the first ecclesiastical building on the site might have been a foundation by Picts in the seventh or early eighth century, and some Pictish stonework still exists in the remains of the priory. In the twelfth century, it was a cell of Augustinian canons.
