Description
Between 1798 and 1800, William Birch and his son Thomas designed and published twenty-eight engraved views of Philadelphia. Occasionally William reworked those that did not satisfy him. This impression, dated 1801, represents a second state, where the description of Philadelphia’s location was changed from “on the River Delaware” to “in the State of Pennsylvania.”
Related examples: Snyder 1975b, p. 226, fig. 137, illustrates the first state.
