Description

Half-length three-quarter portrait of a Maori girl wearing a korowai. Below the portrait is a two-line verse in Maori. Hutton writes: 'The meaning of the song below is "Though many, very many wear the koroai [sic], yet cannot Huia my darling be hid".'

Hutton's Maori verse reads: 'Tini noa manu noa ki te mau te koroai [sic] / Kihai ngarongaro a Huia kai mahinaowa'. The transcription might not be entirely correct.
