Description

This is a drawing of a north-east view of St Andrew's Collegiate Church, Peebles. The page, which is dated 1802, is unsigned by the artist, and the drawing may be one of George Henry Hutton's own works. There are a number of drawings made in Peebles in the Hutton Collection, but only two are views of St Andrew's Collegiate Church. St Andrew's in Peebles was one of the latest churches in Scotland to become collegiate, a status it attained in 1542. The church itself had existed since 1195. Collegiate status means a college of secular canons establishing themselves at a church. The canons dedicated their lives to ecclesiastical learning, and to holding special prayers and masses for the souls of the individuals and families who had been founders or sponsors of the church.
