Admiralty engineer Whately Elliot painted this view of Nelson, New Zealand, in 1874 while engaged on survey work at Timaru. It was the Englishman’s first visit to the country, and during the voyage he recorded 62 views of places he encountered along the way, from Gibraltar to Alexandria and western Australia. His topographical watercolours include details of windmills, seawalls, docks and other engineering works that interested him en route. In this picture you can see the town nestled among towering hills.
