Description

This watercolour of the west end of Peebles Cross Church, Peeblesshire, is undated, but the surname of the artist is Turnbull. This is one of at least eight views of Peebles Cross Church in the Hutton Collection. The doorways shown here in Turnbull's painting were probably part of the main entrance into Peebles Cross Church. It was traditional in medieval church design for the entrance to be in the west wall, at the opposite end of the church from the altar. Altars were usually at the east end, because the Mosaic laws communicated by God to Moses in the Old Testament stipulated that the apostles should pray facing the east. The Cross Church, whose remains still stand in Peebles, dates from AD 1261.
