Description

Symond's Yat, or gate, is a gorge above the Wye about 4 miles upstream of Monmouth, on the Herefordshire and Gloucestershire border. Here, the touches of ochre on the distant trees and rocks combine with the gently washed blues to arrest, at certain key points, the gradual recession towards the far screen of hills. The tiny figures are carefully placed below the looming rock face to emphasize its height and bulk - a favourite device of J R Cozens.
