Description

Watercolour illustration commissioned by William Roxburgh. ROX1296. A small tree, a native of the Delta of the Ganges. It flowers at various seasons, and ripens its seed in from twelve to eighteen months afterwards....The juice of the tree is reckoned of a very poisonous nature. The taste of the fruit is nauseous beyond description. The seeds are used by natives for the nefarious purpose of intoxicating fish', from Roxburgh's 'Flora Indica'. The drawing was originally labelled 'Sapium bengirium'. Roxburgh, 'Flora Indica' (1832) v.3 p.692.
