Description

This pencil sketch bears the date 1781. The artist is unknown. Crichton Castle is about two miles south of Pathhead. It originated as a fourteenth-century tower house, but grew in the fifteenth century into an impressive castle. It is especially famous for Earl Bothwell's Lodging, one of the earliest and most impressive examples of Renaissance architecture in Scotland.
