Inscribed on verso in pen and black and brown ink, upper left: "View of Revel from the Sea taken from the Defiance on the 16th of May 1801"; in pen and black and brown ink, upper right: "Many of the Buildings in the lower town are of wood for which reason I have given some | of them a tinge of red to shew that they were built of brick and tiled, the tops of the Churches | and Publick buildings are covered with Copper, which has a green hue, the High Ground | on which the upper Town or Citadel Stands is a grey earth, with a ragged free Stone Rock, just | under the Walls, the Walls and Towers are in decay. | vv under these mists on the left is the Mole."
