Description

The drawing of the Monastery, which is dated 1801, is unsigned by the artist, and may be the work of George Henry Hutton himself. This is one of several pictures of Peebles Cross Church, made from different perspectives, in the Hutton Collection. Peebles Cross Church or Kirk stands to the north of the modern town of Peebles, on the west bank of the Eddleston Water. Peebles High Street and market cross were originally west of the Eddleston, nearer the Cross Kirk, but after repeated burnings by English invaders, the town centre moved to a more defensible position east of the river in the sixteenth century. The name Monastery of the Holy Cross, used in the title of this drawing, is from a Trinitarian attached to the thirteenth century church in 1474.
