On the old secondary support, now missing - the inscription read, Erecting the land line for the Trans Atlantic Cable at Valentia, Ireland

Laying the first permanent transatlantic cable between Europe and North America was an extraordinary feat of engineering spearheaded by Cyrus West Field and finally achieved by the British ship Great Eastern. The cable enableld speedy communications between the two continents for the first time.
