Description

This engraving shows a view of Perth, as viewed from Wood End. A note on the lower left-hand side names the engraver as A. Robertson. It is also inscribed to Lady Charlotte Murray by Alexander Murray. No date has been included. This engraving certainly represents Perth as a busy place, with a number of small merchant ships visible on the River Tay, and men working in the field in the foreground. The Old Bridge, also known as Smeaton's Bridge, can be seen on the right of the engraving, while the spire of St John's Kirk dominates the city's skyline. In short, the engraving is very much a mixture of urban and rural landscapes - an accurate reflection of Perth's hybrid identity.
