Ponga Whare, was built by Hauhau prisoners on Wharekauri Station for the station owner Edward Chudleigh in 1867. see: https://www.heritage.org.nz/the-list/details/5399 Edward Chudleigh ran sheep on the 13,000-hectare Wharekauri station from the 1860s to 1909 – Mt Chudleigh (188 m) was named after him.
