In his 'Flora Indica', Roxburgh describes this species as a prickly tree. It is native of the coast of Coromandel, where it grows mainly on low lands at a considerable distance from the sea; it is also found in some parts of the Hindoostan. It flowers during the cold and the beginning of the hot season. Roxburgh also describes the use that the natives make with the podsof this species. The drawing has been inscribed 'Received from Leopard Man of War 30th November 1791' in an unknown hand.
