TWW Comment

Titian Ramsay Peale accompanied Stephen Harriman Long on his expeditions to the American west in 1819-1820. Long's team of topographical engineers and scientists left St Louis, Missouri, in June 1819, on the steamboat 'Western Engineer' and travelled up the Missouri River to Nebraska. They set up a winter camp near Fort Lisa, a trading fort of the Missouri Fur Company, at a site that they named the 'Engineering Cantonment'. Peale made many nature studies while at the encampment including this watercolour of a Wood Duck, a migrating bird which visits Nebraska in the spring and autumn.
