Description

There is no general title included on this sheet. The first drawing says, 'Elevation of Old Carmelite Church - South Queensferry by Mr Alex. Morton'. The second reads, 'Perspective view of the Carmelite Church / South-Queensferry from S.E'. This is one of two architectural drawings made of this building by Alexander Morton, the other being dated 1813. Morton was a prolific recorder of ecclesiastical monuments in this area. George Dundas established this Carmelite house in 1330. It was not until his descendant James Dundas, in 1440, gifted this site and the surrounding lands to the house, however, that they gained a permanent home and source of wealth. The Dundas family dedicated the House to the Virgin Mary, the order's patron, in order to pray for the family. It would have formed a vital and important stage of the pilgrimage to St Andrews and Dunfermline Abbey.
