Description

Survivors of a shipwreck trudging across the ice into the left foreground, including a man who bends to lift a box labelled 'I T Serres / 1799', another helping a woman over a ledge to right, with the ship leaning on one side agains the ice in the background. 1802. Hand-coloured etching and aquatint.

Inscription

Lettered below the image with the title and 'vide Capt. Jas. Wallis's letter to Adml. Dickson / Design'd & Etchd. by J.T. Serres Marine Painter to his Majesty & H.R.H. the Duke of Clarence. / Publish'd as the Act Directs April 23d. 1802, by Edwad. Orme, 59 New Bond Street.'
