Description

Watercolour painting on paper of the mausoleum of I'timad al-Daula at Agra. The title I'timad al-Daula (Emperor's Pillar) was bestowed upon Mirza Ghiyas Beg by Emperor Jahangir. Mirza Ghiyas Beg’s daugther, Nur Jahan married Jahangir and the mausoleum was commissioned by Nur Jahan after her father’s death. The painting shows the exterior of the mausoleum from the front, raised up on red sandstone plinth. The structure is square and has an octagonal minaret on each corner. In the centre of the building’s roof is a covered pavilion which marks the tomb chamber below. The building is completely faced in white marble and lavishly decorated with mosaics and inlay work of coloured marbles and carved corbels and balustrades. The painting is framed by a thick black line.
