Watercolour painting with a pen and ink border of Shalimar Bagh (gardens), 5 miles north-east of Lahore. The gardens were laid out in 1642 on the orders of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (ruled 1628-1658). The painting shows the three descending terraces that made up the gardens and were connected by the flow of water through channels, pools and fountains. The garden is shown surrounded by a wall in which large amounts of foliage grows. In the first terrace is a rectangular water channel surrounded by trees, and at the far end is a gateway. Behind this is the central terrace, dominated by a large square water tank with decorated borders and pavilions. In the final terrace of the garden is shown another rectangular water channel flanked by trees and foliage as well as pavilions and other buildings. This drawing alters the perspective in order to depict all three of the gardens levels.
