Description
Annotated drawing of Kilwinning Abbey, Ayrshire. A note at the top, under the title, continues 'communicated by the Revd. Wm. Pollock'. It is one of three images of Kilwinning Abbey contained in the Hutton Collection, each by a different artist. The numbered annotations on the sheet indicate the Steeple, a building that is 'supposed to be Hall of the Abbot's House', and the churchyard. The ruins of the medieval abbey dominate the centre of the Ayrshire town of Kilwinning. The abbey was a Tironesian foundation, built in 1162, and apparently, when still intact, was very similar in structure to Glasgow Cathedral, which dated from between the 1130s and the 1190s. While Glasgow Cathedral was one of the few significant Scottish monastic buildings to survive the Reformation of 1560 relatively undamaged, Kilwinning was less fortunate.
