Description

The title and date are inscribed verso in pencil - 'The Breddyan [Breidden] Hills in Shropshire 1808'. This small painting depicts a rural landscape, fields and hedges in the foreground, a rather exaggerated church with spire middle distance, and the Breidden Hills in the distance. On the top of the right hill is shown an indication of a monument - Rodney's Pillar, a well-known local landmark. Admiral Rodney's Pillar was erected in 1781-1782 to commemorate the naval victories of Sir George Brydges Rodney. The church could possibly be Leighton Village Church (Holy Trinity), churches with spires being more unusual on the Welsh borders.
