Clients who could not afford more elaborate coloured drawings with numerous figures might buy a simpler drawings of a single figure. Adriaen van Ostade must have made many images of single subjects like these, which took hardly any time to complete.; Wie niet genoeg geld had om een bewerkelijke gekleurde tekening met veel personages te kopen, kon zich misschien nog wel de aanschaf van een simpel blaadje met een enkele figuur veroorloven. Adriaen van Ostade moet mannekes zoals deze twee, die hem niet al teveel tijd kostten, in grote aantallen hebben geproduceerd.
