Description

Restalrig Loch and the ruins of Restalrig (also known as Lochend) Castle, Mid-Lothian. There are no names or dates attached to this colour drawing but it is one of two images of Restalrig amongst the Hutton Collection. The building on the hill is the ruined remains of the old Castle of the Logan family. People commonly know this area and the loch as Lochend. The land around Restalrig, and the village itself, was once the possession of the de Lestalric family. They may have been Norman immigrants, who arrived under David I's settlement policy. The first mention of them and their Restalrig lands was in 1198 and it was in connection with ecclesiastical patron, and so recorded by Dunfermline Abbey. The name may be a corruption of their family name. The Logans of Coatfield eventually took possession of the de Lestalric barony and built their own stronghold on this hill.
