Description
A study looking west from the ground floor of the eastern bay window of the Trafalgar Tavern, to the western bay, the corner of the Five-Foot Walk and of the Queen Anne Court of the Royal Naval College, with Deptford Power Station behind the trees and another industrial building with a tall chimney on the waterfront in the distance. The season appears to be spring, in grey weather, with the Thames at half-tide or high-water neap. Three men are by the railings on the corner of the walk, one possibly calling to a boat seen off it. A sailing ship is on moorings in the river off Deptford beyond. The Tavern was built in 1837. This view, or a similar one from the first floor balcony above was also done by other artists, most notably James Tissot (exhibited painting and etching, 1878, see PAG9434). The drawing, one of the studio collection purchased by Sir James Caird, is inscribed in pencil by the artist, lower left, 'The Trafalgar Greenwich'.
