Description
Sketch of a north view of St Fillan's Priory, Strathfillan, Perthshire. It is dated 13th July 1789, but is unsigned by the artist. This is one of four images relating to St Fillan's Priory in the Hutton Collection. Of the other three, one image is undated, and two are dated 1820. It is quite possible, however, that George Henry Hutton was responsible for all four images, as his career as an amateur antiquary spanned almost forty years. The remains of St Fillan's Priory stand in Strathfillan at the east end of Loch Earn in Perthshire. The priory is reputed to have been founded by St Fillan, the son of St Kentigern, in the eighth century. Little remains of the priory beyond the foundations, as it was quarried to provide building stone for surrounding farms, but the ruins suggest that the priory complex was once quite extensive.
