Description

A view of the front of Rathfarnham Castle, Co. Dublin set against a tree lined background. In the foreground, a man and woman walk in the grounds of the castle.
The original castle at Rathfarnham dates back to the Elizabethan period and was built for Archbishop Adam Loftus, who later became Lord Chancellor of Ireland. In the late eighteenth century, the house was remodelled with assistance from some of the finest architects of the day including Sir William Chambers and James ‘Athenian’ Stuart. It was acquired by the State in 1987.
