Description

Although the artist has written ‘Midlothian’ on this drawing, Dirleton Castle is in fact in East Lothian. The drawing shows the castle and its environs, including part of the coastline. In the area to the right of the castle, two people, a dog and a small flock of sheep have all been sketched in very faintly. Built in the thirteenth century, the original stone castle consisted of two square towers and four round towers. Throughout the centuries, the castle underwent many changes and alterations, often because of invasion. It was finally abandoned as a residence in the seventeenth century. For many years, stones were gathered from the ruin to build cottages and walls in the local area.
