Description
Beneath the title, of this drawing of the old tower of Kilwinning Abbey, Ayrshire, a note, probably by Hutton, reads, 'Comd. by the Revd. Mr Stirling, Minr. Of Port Monteath'. This is one of three images of Kilwinning Abbey contained in the Hutton Collection, each by a different artist. The Reformation of 1560 destroyed much of the medieval abbey at Kilwinning, but the central tower, similar in appearance to that of Glasgow Cathedral, stood until 1814, when it collapsed after a lightning strike had weakened its structure. The phrase 'as it stood' in Hutton's title indicates that he received, or at least titled, before a new tower appeared in 1816.
