Description
This drawing, of Main square, Lauder, Berwickshire, is undated, and unsigned by the artist. This is the only image of Lauder in the Hutton Collection. In this drawing, the Town Hall or Tollbooth of Lauder is in the foreground, to the left. The artist has given a strong impression of the manner in which the distinctive building, with its steeple and entrance at the top of a flight of broad steps, dominates the square at the centre of Lauder. The church, built in 1673, is behind the Tollbooth, slightly left of centre, and is a very distinctive building. Its design has the body of the church laid out in a Greek Cross shape around a central pulpit, and the bell-tower octagonal in form and built above the centre point of the church, and is unique in Scotland.
