Description

There are no details attached to drawing of Dunfermline Abbey, although it is one of eight views of the Abbey and its ruined monastery. This, the east end, now houses Dunfermline Parish Church and is a flourishing community focal point. A member of the Scottish Culdee Church married Malcolm Canmore and Margaret Aethling in Dunfermline in about 1070. It was about two years after this that Queen Margaret, of Anglo-Saxon descent and of Roman-Catholic persuasion, invited the Benedictine Order to establish a house there. This also led to the demise of the Celtic-Culdee faith in the area. The original church and monastery were smaller and of wattle and daub.
