Description

A pioneering couple seated in front of a slab hut, a baby on the woman's knee. A dog drinks out of a water trough, there is a water-barrel beneath the roof of an adjacent building, a saw-horse stands beneath a shelter on the left and the house has a wooden chimney.

There is strong doubt about the attribution of this work to Frances Hodgkins. Although her signature varied, the signature on this work is not like other frequently-used signatures on her work and is not even certainly F. H. The work has a painted border, not a usual feature of her work. It could have been done as an illustration for something, but the subject matter is not typical of her work.
