Description

A three-masted sailing ship in a storm and high seas, close to a hilly and rocky coastline visible in the background

Another version of the wreck of the Alcmene, also by Cuthbert Clarke, is in the British Library (Add MS 19954, f 3 (3)), a crayon drawing showing the ship on a similar angle but closer to the cliffs, heeled over and dismasted

Clarke is not known to have witnessed the wreck of this ship, although he was in New Zealand in 1851
