Description

Colour wash drawing of a ‘church’ at Iona, 'from a sketch by Capt. Columbine'. The ‘church’ may be unnamed but it looks like the Abbey tower. Captain Columbine worked in the area and drew other Iona monuments in 1792. There are nine views of Iona in the Hutton Collection. Edward Henry Columbine (c.1760-1811), worked in the Royal Navy between 1790 and 1803, mainly as a hydrographer, eventually attaining the ranks of Lieutenant and then Captain. During his career, he was involved in official Board of Admiralty investigations. Although charged with the loss of the ship the Soleby, he won an acquittal and went on to complete major surveys along the west coast of Africa. He died travelling home from Africa, of a fever, in June 1811.
