Description

There are no details attached to this engraving of Culross Abbey and town, Fife. The Abbey tower dominates the skyline and the whole building stands at the top of the hill overlooking the town. Culross was founded as a Cistercian house in 1218, by Malcolm the Earl of Fife. Although once very prosperous it had fallen into decay by the time, the east choir was restructured to house the parish church. The town itself enjoyed a flourishing economy based on trade, coal and salt panning. This too, however, was on the wan by the middle of the nineteenth century.
