TWW Comment
The first quarantine station on the Schuylkill River was established in 1742 near Fort Mifflin, on Province Island, but a serious outbreak of yellow fever in Philadelphia in 1793 necessitated its relocation to a more remote site. The Lazaretto Quarantine Station was built in 1799 in the Tinicum Township and is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
