Description

Five people seated in a double canoe (Wa'a kaulua) with a trilateral sail (possibly intended to represent a crab-claw sprit sail). Three men are paddling, while two others and a dog rest on the platform. Above, outlined in pencil, is the back view of a seated male figure, hair tied back, a belt at the waist

Joppien / Smith number for this drawing is 3.320. The canoe and its sail are very similar to those depicted in A-264-021-1 and to the foreground canoes in a view by Ellis 'Kealakekua Bay with the Ships at anchor, Feb 1779' a wash and watercolour drawing in the Public Record Office, London, ref. MPM44.
