Description

This drawing captures a spectacular view of the remains of St Mary's Chapel, in a rocky bay in the Shiant Islands, south-east of the Isle of Lewis. The drawing is dated 1818 and is the work of William Daniell, who was responsible for several drawings in the Hutton Collection. This is one of two images relating to this site in the collection. The Shiant Islands are made up of twelve islands, only six of which are large and fertile enough to support any vegetation. The Shiants are best known as the habitat of a huge colony of sea-birds, but at least three of the islands have been populated by humans at some time in their history, and Eilean an Tighe remains inhabited. The historic origins of the ruined chapel of St Mary are unknown, but the island on which it sits also carries the name of the saint, being known as Eilean Mhuire, or Mary's Island.
