Description

Hearne's interest in Medieval architecture developed during his apprenticeship to William Woollett. The broken washes and touches of colour on the sunlit masonry are early evidence of his lifelong fascination with texture and the play of light on stonework. This composition was engraved for Hearne's Antiquities of Great Britain, published in 1786.
