Description

This drawing of Loch Leven Castle was made by Miss Alicia Jones (later Mrs Duke Crofton of Lakefield, Co. Leitrim, Ireland) in 1807. A note at the foot of the drawing states the artist's name and that she was from 'Belleville near Athlone'. Loch Leven Castle is probably most famous as being the location where Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned in June 1567, during the Scottish Reformation. Dating back to the thirteenth century, King Robert II of Scotland granted the castle to the Douglas family in 1372. Indeed, Willie Douglas helped the young queen escape in 1568, even though his father was Mary's gaoler. Sir William Bruce purchased the castle from the impoverished Douglas family in 1764.
