Description

No title appears underneath this picture, of the south and east sides of a pillar at Deadrig, Berwickshire. Instead, it is on the base of the pillar, as if it was one of the inscriptions. At the bottom of the sheet, a note explains that the drawing shows the south and west sides of the pillar. Another drawing by the same hand in the Hutton Collection shows the north and east sides. This pillar probably commemorates a warrior from near Deadrig. On one of the sides of the pillar, obscured in this drawing, there is an engraving of a man, apparently laid to rest. The sword in this drawing suggests that this was a man accustomed to fighting in battle. It is not possible from this picture to estimate the age or origins of the cross.
