Description

Guercino’s paintings were widely collected, but his artistic reputation is primarily based on his drawings.
His landscape drawings were not used for the backgrounds of paintings but made for his own amusement.
This majestic and poetic landscape is an independent, highly finished drawing exhibiting the skillful handling of calligraphic pen lines. Guercino’s precision of line and meticulous divisions of spatial planes reflect the influence of Northern prints. His landscape drawings also recall the lyrical and idyllic manner of the Venetians—Giorgione, Titian, and Domenico Campagnola—while demonstrating the naturalistic influence of the Carracci academy in Bologna.
The artist utilized landscape motifs around his native town of Cento, embellishing the scene with his imagination. Guercino captured the windswept trees, panoramic terrain, swiftly moving clouds, and figures walking along a path and rowing in a boat on a babbling river.
