Description

View from a high point looking down over Whangaimoana Station, with the homestead, another house and a barn, a fenced garden area, a shelter-belt of trees, a meandering stream marked by trees and the foothills of the Rimutaka Range in the background. In the foreground are low hills with sheep on the right side. The view is probably from near Whangaimoana Beach on the shores of Lake Ferry.

Probably done while the artist was accompanying Donald McLean on a trip from Wellington to Hawkes Bay, to acquire land. The pair left Wellington in December 1850. The homestead belonged to Thomas Purvis Russell and his brothers (Henry, Robert and John) and sister (Anne), who squatted in the Wairarapa from 1847. The property and a later homestead are still called Whangaimoana.
